Processing: How Journal Entries Become Artwork
For the new body of work in my current show, Becoming Ourselves, I incorporated old journal entries into the background of each piece to serve as visual texture and lend the work a personal, autobiographical feel. I used journal pages from a different period of my life for each one.
My New Show: Becoming Ourselves
I'm excited to announce my latest two-person show at Dane Arts Gallery with my friend and fellow artist Jan Richardson! In this show, we've both created work that explores aspects of the self over the course of time, approaching this theme from our own points of view.
Drawing Demo: Portrait of Sarai
Here's a look at my process for painting/drawing a portrait from life. I worked on this portrait for about 3.5 hours from start to finish.
Recent Life Drawing Pieces
I relish weekly figure drawing sessions at Atwood Atelier—not only as an opportunity to keep practicing and improving my work, but also as a chance to have one evening a week where I get to focus completely on art, no matter what.
The Stories Behind "Painting the Past"
As you may know, for the past few years, I have been working on documenting the artwork and legacy of my Grandpa, Kenneth Graham. Now, I’ve had the opportunity to transform these forgotten photos into paintings featuring my grandparents, my mom, and her four siblings.

Two Dreamy Weeks at Penland
Imagine a place nestled in a bucolic mountain setting of rolling hills and lush rhododendron forests, a place where gravel paths wind among art studios buzzing with energy and creativity. This is Penland School of Crafts, and it's a dreamy place.
Eclipse Chasing in Southern Illinois
One day in early spring, my husband said to me, "Hey, this summer, do you want to go on an adventure to Southern Illinois to see a solar eclipse?" Naturally, I said, "heck yes!"
I didn't know much about the upcoming eclipse at that point, but it wasn't long before I caught "eclipse fever" like everyone else.
Portrait of Jihae
Here is a portrait I did recently at Atwood Atelier. Our sitter was a young woman named Jihae, who had lovely green highlights in her hair that were fun to draw. I spent about 3.5 hours working on this piece.
Art Show Review: Do Ho Suh at MMOCA
I moved a lot when I was a kid. Like many people with similar stories, my thoughts and feelings about "home" are, well, a bit complex. And so I was excited to experience Do Ho Suh's work for the first time at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art—work that explores some of these themes of home, migration, and belonging.
Work in Progress: Seated Nude Process Photos
This was a four-hour painting from the latest Monday-night figure model session at Atwood Atelier. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it.
A Glimpse Inside My Spare-Bedroom Studio
My studio is a cozy spare bedroom with hardwood floors, two windows, and a walk-up to our attic…
